Active emphatic listening is the most powerful coaching tool in the coach's arsenal. It is so because your coachee is empowered by your attention, and is able to tell you all the things that you need to know in order to do a good job as a coach. So, what will you learn if you listen carefully and attentively to your client?

You will find out the facts of his career life, the actual result he got until today.
You will be able to identify reoccurring patterns in this information that will help you answer the following questions:
What are the coachee values?
What are the coachee's principles of operation?
How does the coachee's decision-making-process works?
What are the reoccurring patterns of his success and failure stories?
What are his blocks?

Whenever you client speaks of a choice he made, he is giving out clues to his values and blocks. Good decisions usually point to values, while decisions that led to bad results are usually dictated by the client's blocks.

Actions that are motivated by believes, ideologies, and conscious usually stem from the coachee's strongest values. These form the basic ingredients of his inner character.

Repeated patterns of behavior in the coachee's career often points to his principles of operations. Patterns of success in the work environment are very important to identify. They are what the coachee "gives" in order to get the things he needs. These represent his strongest value for which his employers pay him – be them his customers or his boss.

All these are important elements that a coach need to identify with his client. Only after you understand how your coachee operates, 'what makes him tick', if you will, only then can you help him develop his vision and his success strategies.
